Monday evening, our friend Jeremy Cowart sent a tweet out about a crèche in Haiti with an immediate need, asking for people to help. Their only generator had gone out. Jeremy and his wife Shannon were able to connect us with Giving Hope Rescue Mission, which supports the crèche to find out more. The generator pumps up water from their well and provides them with electricity. Although they still have access to water without a generator, someone has to use a 5-gallon bucket and pull it up out of the well. (Which is a lot of buckets for baths and laundry!) The electricity keeps the fans running. It is so hot and humid in Haiti in the summer time and the fans help keep a breeze flowing. We knew we had to get involved. We were able to make a $2500 donation immediately, but we really wanted to do more. They needed $15,000 and we wanted to partner with our supporters to help them raise it. Tuesday morning, alongside Jeremy’s Twitter campaign, many of our amazing supporters rallied together and started donating through Giving Hope Rescue Mission’s nonprofit partner agency, Voice of the Orphan. With the help of Jeremy and our supporters, and plenty of retweets, $11,000 had been raised by Tuesday night. Then, something even more amazing happened. A major corporation generously offered to donate a generator to the crèche! This means not only will they have a new generator, but they now have funds to purchase batteries, an inverter, which charges the batteries and saves fuel, fans and even multiple ac units for the kids’ rooms.
We are so thankful for the generosity of our supporters, but let’s not stop now. Together we can make a difference. We are going to continue through the rest of the week to use our proceeds to benefit the crèche, and will continue to post links to donate to them directly as well. Michelle See, from Giving Hope Rescue Mission, says that they are shocked and humbled by everyone’s generosity and willingness to help.
